BioBricks are standardized building block in synthetic biology, the consist of circular DNA (plasmid) and code for a specific function like a protein. The BioBrick system contains defined restrictions sites, therefore it is easy to combine and interconnect different functions.

In general three levels of complexity are distinguished:

1. simple parts like proteins, promoters, RBS, terminators

2. Devices, they consists of wired parts like a RBS in front of a protein sequence

3. Systems are interconnected devices (like ab electric circuit) e.g. a combination of promoter, RBS, protein and terminator

Through combination of a wide range of parts, and devices plenty of new functions can be generated. All parts, devices and systems are open source and available in a public library (Registry of standard biological parts).
