Scientists out or this fields are working close together to build new not natural biological systems with defined functions. Here the biologist become a designer of molecules, cells and organisms aiming to create biological systems with defined functions. Many people see synthetic biology as the latest development of modern biology with great future potential. In synthetic biology the boundaries of classic specialist discipline become blurred.

In contrast to genetic engineering in synthetic biology not only single genes are transfered from organism A to B, but the aim is to generate whole synthetic genetic circuits which are interacting with each other and the host organism to create new biological functions.
