This year, students from the fields of biology, chemistry, biomolecular engineering, and asian studies are taking part in iGEM and creating the project together as a team. Interdisciplinarity is an important aspect, as the project can be viewed from different perspectives. Additionally, the team profits from the variety of skills and capabilities when it comes to working on the far-reaching goals that we set ourselves. The diverse branches of study and levels of knowledge lead to an active dialogue between the members of the team and help to form our versatile project.
Knowledge of engineering and information science supports the realization of computer-based analyses of the enzymes we use in our project and their corresponding interactions with different ligands. Our modeling team is staffed by students especially from the fields of biology and biomolecular engineering. The resulting connection of technical and biological know-how is a great convenience when working on these tasks.
Ultimately, the project itself profits from the individual perspective of every team member. The students can learn new things and skills, but they are also able to scrutinize their own knowledge when confronted with other opinions. The importance of this aspect becomes clear when our human practices work is considered. Students leave their “science bubble” and get in touch with people representing various walks of life. This forwards the project too and strengthens the connection between science and society. The newly gained impressions are integrated and so “our” project becomes a project “for everyone”.
